Champions League Round of 16 Preview: Week 2

The Champion’s League Round of 16 moves into its second week of games, and it’s time to preview each matchup.

Lille vs Chelsea

Outlook: Both these teams come into this matchup in shaky form, Chelsea winning 1 of their last 5 while Lille’s won 2 of their last 6. This should lead to a tight contest where we could see 1 goal getting a side through.

Top Goal Scorer: Kai Havertz – Been getting full time in the squad again and has yet to make the most of it, but could get back to form in the tournament he saw Chelsea through to Champions last year.

Surprise Performance: Jonathan David – this guy still seems to somehow be under the radar. Been performing great this year for club and country.

Result: Chelsea (2-1)

Villareal vs Juventus

Outlook: Another close matchup, Juve and Villareal should be in store for some fireworks. Juve have been playing better of late, but have still run into games where they just can’t get past inferior opponents. Villareal have been picking up results, but their lack of experience in knockout European tournaments not named the Europa League leads to some concerned.

Top Goal Scorer: Dusan Vlahovic – The young Serbian striker has cooled off from his former scorching form, but should be in store for plenty of chances in this matchup.

Surprise Performance: Denis Zakaria – The Juve midfielder has been stout in his engine role for Juve, and should be put to the test.

Result: Juventus (4-2)

Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United

Outlook: A powerhouse matchup, two of Europe’s elites go head-to-head in what is arguably the most even matchup of all Round of 16 fixtures. Both teams are playing well, and both have had their struggles in the Champions League knockout rounds of late. This one could go either way.

Top Goal Scorer: Cristiano Ronaldo – I don’t think Ronaldo has more motivation playing anyone then he does when he plays Atletico (even more then Barca). Loves to shoot down their chances and should have plenty opportunity to do just that.

Surprise Performance: Joao Felix – Yet another big named young star that hasn’t totally put it together yet. Perfect opportunity for him to do it against one of Europe’s biggest clubs and his fellow countryman Ronaldo.

Result: Atletico Madrid (3-2)

Benfica vs Ajax

Outlook: Two non-big five teams face off in another close matchup. Ajax sit atop the Eredivisie as Benfica sit 3rd in Liga Portuguesa. This matchup should see it’s fair share of goals.

Top Goal Scorer: Antony – The Brazialian forward continues to fill the stat sheet in league play and should be able to abuse his pace against the Benfica back line.

Surprise Performance: Darwin Nunez – The young forward continues to impress some of Europe’s bigger clubs and will have a chance to really stamp his name with some big games here.

Result: Ajax (5-2)
